TICK IDENTIFICATION KEY

This tick identification key was designed for use by researchers, clinicians and healthcare workers as well as educational purposes in the field of parasitology.
It combines the methods utilised in original keys (developed in 1956 by Hoogstraal) with clear photographic illustrations, to facilitate the recognition of ticks.

Ticks are classified as Arthropods (Arachnida, order:Acarina) and are obligate blood sucking ectoparasites. They are important vectors to various major diseases to birds, reptiles and mammals (humans included) and therefore pose a medical, veterinary but also economical threat.

By identification of the tick genus or species the potential risk to animals and humans, as well as the potential disease prevalence in tick infested areas, may be assessed and thus more adequately controlled.

This program contains a user-friendly tick genus identification key (suitable for all levels of expertise), along with background information on the biology of various tick species.
